📘 原級比較（as … as）

「同じくらい〜」は as ＋ 原級 ＋ as。否定は not as（so）… as（〜ほど…ない）。

■ He is as tall as his father. （父と同じくらいの背。）
■ This isn’t as easy as it looks. （見た目ほど簡単ではない。）

📘 倍数表現（〜倍）

倍数 ＋ as ＋ 原級 ＋ as（または倍数＋the＋名詞）。

■ This room is twice as large as that one. （2倍の広さ。）
■ It costs three times as much as before. （以前の3倍かかる。）
※ half as 〜 as（半分）／ … times the size of（〜の◯倍の大きさ）も頻出。

📘 the ＋ 比較級, the ＋ 比較級（〜すればするほど）

■ The more you practice, the better you get.
■ The higher we climbed, the colder it became.

📘 比較級 and 比較級（ますます〜）

■ It’s getting hotter and hotter. （ますます暑くなる。）
■ more and more people（ますます多くの人）

📘 〔上級〕原級・比較級で「最上級」を表す

最上級を使わずに「一番」を表す言い方です。書きかえ問題の定番。

■ No (other) mountain in Japan is as high as Mt. Fuji.
■ No (other) mountain in Japan is higher than Mt. Fuji.
■ Mt. Fuji is higher than any other mountain in Japan.
（＝ Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.）

📘 最上級の重要表現（上級）

① 最上級の強調（断然〜）

by far / much ＋ the ＋ 最上級、the very ＋ 最上級。

■ by far the best ／ the very best （文句なしの一番）

② the がつかない最上級

• 副詞の最上級：He runs (the) fastest.（the は省略可）
• 同じ人・物の中で比べるときは the なし：This lake is deepest here. （ここが一番深い＝他の湖と比べていない）
• 補語の「最も〜」：I’m happiest when I’m with you.

③ 〜番目に…（the second ＋ 最上級）

■ the second largest city （2番目に大きい都市）／ the third longest river

④ 最上級 ＋ that … have ever …（今まで〜した中で一番）

■ This is the best movie (that) I’ve ever seen. （今まで見た中で一番の映画）

⑤ at most / at least / at best

■ at most ten（多くて10）／ at least five（少なくとも5）／ at best（よくても）

⑥ make the most / best of（最大限に活かす）

■ make the most of your time （時間を最大限に活かす）／ make the best of a bad situation

📘 〔上級〕紛らわしい比較の慣用表現

• no more than＝「たった（only）」　／ not more than＝「せいぜい（at most）」
• no less than＝「〜も（as much as）」／ not less than＝「少なくとも（at least）」
• all the ＋ 比較級 ＋ for / because（〜だからかえって一層）
  　■ I like him all the better for his faults.
• none the less（それでもなお）／ much less（まして〜ない）
• prefer A to B（B より A を好む）／ would rather A than B

📘 〔上級〕ラテン比較級（than でなく to）

語尾が -or の比較級は、than ではなく to をとります。

■ This is superior to that. （これはあれより優れている。）
■ He is senior to me. （私より先輩・年上。）
※ ほかに inferior to（劣る）／ junior to（後輩）／ prior to（〜より前に）。

🚩 ネイティブはこう感じる

① the 比較級構文は会話でもよく使う

■ The sooner, the better. （早ければ早いほどいい。）← 省略形の決まり文句

② 比較対象は「形」をそろえる

くらべるものは文法的に対等にします。

• ✗ The population of Tokyo is larger than Osaka. → ◎ … than that of Osaka. （指示代名詞 that of）

③ 〔最上級〕no more 〜 than（鯨構文）

■ A whale is no more a fish than a horse is. （馬が魚でないのと同じく、クジラも魚ではない。）← 上級者向けの有名構文
