📘 by（手段・方法）

「〜によって・〜で」と手段・方法を表します。交通・通信手段は無冠詞。

■ by car ／ by train ／ by email ／ by credit card ／ by mistake（誤って）

• 受動態の動作主：The window was broken by Tom.
• by ＋ -ing（〜することで）：You learn by doing.

📘 with（道具・付帯）

「〜を使って（道具）」「〜を持って・〜とともに」。

■ cut it with a knife ／ write with a pen ／ a girl with blue eyes ／ go with friends

• 反対：without（〜なしで）

👉 by は「手段・方法」、with は「道具・付帯」。go by bus（手段）／ open it with a key（道具）。

📘 about / on（〜について）

• about：一般的に「〜について」　■ a story about love ／ talk about it
• on：専門的・学術的に「〜に関する」　■ a book on economics ／ a lecture on history

📘 of（所属・部分・材料）

■ the leg of the table ／ a cup of coffee ／ made of wood ／ one of them

📘 〔上級〕as と like の違い

• as：「〜として」（資格・役割）　■ work as a teacher ／ use it as a desk
• like：「〜のように」（似ている）　■ run like the wind ／ He looks like his father.

👉 as ＝実際にそれである／ like ＝それに似ている。

📘 for（理由・対象・交換）

■ Thank you for your help. ／ pay for the meal ／ a present for you ／ famous for wine

📘 原因・理由を表す前置詞

「〜で・〜のために」という原因・理由は、日本語だとどれも同じですが、英語では何が原因かによって前置詞を選びます。決まった言い回しが多いので、フレーズごと覚えるのがコツです。

前置詞	イメージ	例
for	感情・行動の理由	jump for joy（喜びで飛び上がる）／ cry for joy
with	感情・体の反応の原因	tremble with cold（寒さで震える）／ pale with fear（恐怖で青ざめる）
at	出来事・知らせへの反応	be surprised at the news ／ be angry at the result
out of	動機・気持ちから	out of curiosity（好奇心から）／ out of kindness（親切心から）
from / of	病気・原因で（死ぬ・苦しむ）	die from an injury ／ die of cancer
through	〜のせいで（不注意など）	through carelessness（不注意から）

👉 とくに迷いやすいのが die from と die of。はっきり区別しないネイティブも多いですが、目安は of＝病気・老衰など内的な原因（die of cancer / old age）、from＝けが・外的な要因（die from an injury）です。

👉 感情の原因は with（震え・青ざめなど体の反応）と at（出来事への驚き・怒り）が定番。tremble with cold（寒さで体が反応）／ surprised at the news（知らせという出来事に反応）と覚えると整理できます。

👉 by は原因・理由には使いません。 by は「手段・方法・動作主」専用です。by mistake（誤って）／ by accident（偶然）／ by chance（たまたま）は「〜で」と訳せるため原因と勘違いしがちですが、これは「どういうなりゆき・様態で」という意味で、原因（because of など）とは別物です。■ I sent it by mistake.（誤って送った＝様態）／ canceled because of the rain（雨が原因）。

📘 群前置詞（2語以上で1つの前置詞）

• because of / due to（〜が原因で）／ thanks to（〜のおかげで）
• instead of（〜の代わりに）／ in spite of（〜にもかかわらず）
• according to（〜によると）／ in front of（〜の前で）

🚩 ネイティブはこう感じる

① by car（手段）と in my car（具体的な車）

「手段」を言うときは無冠詞の by、特定の車・に乗ってと言うときは in / on を使います。

• I go to work by car.（手段）／ I went there in my car.（自分の車で）

② by と with の感覚

• by＝どんな方法・手段でするか（by hand＝手作業で）
• with＝どんな道具・ものを使うか（with my hands＝（自分の）手を使って）

③ about と on の深さ

• about＝気軽に・一般的に　／ on＝専門的・まとまった内容（論文・専門書は on）

④ 〔注意〕because と because of

• because ＋ 文（S＋V）：because it rained
• because of ＋ 名詞：because of the rain
